Just saw this really weird, interesting, and beautiful film, Black Moon, by legendary director Louis Malle. The film is essentially a young girl’s journey into absurdity, where a chunky, black, talking unicorn roams and a creepy grandmother needs to be breastfed. But symbolically it’s a film that celebrates feminism and shows a young girl’s transition into womanhood. It’s beautifully shot and has the feel of Luis Bunuel’s Milky Way or Phantom of Liberty, in that there’s less of a traditional plot and more a series of stream of conscious imagery held together loosely by a couple of themes. As a huge fan of surreal films, I was surprised this flew under my radar, but I’m glad I finally got to watch it. Also, Joe Dallesandro from the wonderfully weird Paul Morissey films (Flesh for Frankenstein, Trash, Blood for Dracula) is in here! Check it out if you get a chance.

Great review of Godard’s La Chinoise. A brilliant and overlooked film that’s a critique of the “New Left” and student revolutionaries during that time, rather than a critique on Marxism itself.
